Installing

How to install

Resource packs stay zipped. Maps get unzipped. That one distinction is where most installs go wrong.

Resource packs

Download the zip

Leave it as a .zip. Do not extract it — Minecraft reads the archive directly.

Open the pack folder

In Minecraft go to Options › Resource Packs › Open Pack Folder. That opens .minecraft/resourcepacks for you.

Drop it in and activate

Move the zip into that folder, return to Minecraft, and click the pack's arrow to move it to the selected column. Hit Done.

On 1.8.9, ideally with OptiFine

The packs target 1.8.9. OptiFine is optional, but it unlocks the connected-texture extras and adds a solid FPS gain of its own.

Maps

Unzip the download

This one does get extracted. You want the folder that contains level.dat.

Find your saves folder

Windows: paste %appdata%\.minecraft\saves into the address bar. macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. Linux: ~/.minecraft/saves.

Move the world folder in

Drop the extracted folder into saves. If you see a folder containing another folder, move the inner one.

Launch and play

Open Minecraft 1.15.2 or later. The map appears in your singleplayer world list.
